Examiner Insights/Edexcel IGCSE History

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Analyzing What instead of How in Question (a) Paper 1

Many students correctly identify the author’s impression and support it with relevant quotes or information from the text. While this secures marks in Level 2, it prevents them from reaching the highest level.

History

How to improve

To achieve Level 3, you must analyze how the author has deliberately created that impression.

02Common mistake

Describing Effects without Outcomes in Question (b) Paper 1

Students often provide a detailed description of a historical event (e.g., the Munich Putsch or the Korean War) but fail to explain its actual effect. Descriptive writing alone limits marks to the lower levels.

History

How to improve

You must explain the effect in terms of outcomes.

03Common mistake

Making Judgements Without Criteria in Question

Students often have deep knowledge and can argue different sides, but when it comes to the final judgement, they simply state that one factor was "the most important" without explaining why it holds that rank.

““the most important”

History

How to improve

A high-level response requires a criteria-based judgement.

For example, define what "significance" or "importance" means in the context of the question (e.g., scale of the impact, the number of people affected, or the long-term nature of the change).

04Common mistake

Treating Interpretations as a "Matching Exercise" for Paper 2

In Section A, Part (c), a significant mistake is carrying out a simple "audit" or matching exercise between Sources A, B, and Extract C without including contextual knowledge. Students often focus so much on the provided texts that they forget they are being tested on their own historical understanding.

History

How to improve

Use your own knowledge to validate or challenge the claims made in the sources and extract.

A high-level response uses the provided material as a springboard to deploy specific historical facts that support or oppose the given interpretation.

05Common mistake

Identifying Causes Without Explaining the Outcome

For Section B, Part (b) in Paper 2, candidates often identify valid reasons for a change but fail to explain why or how those reasons actually led to the specific outcome mentioned in the question. Many write "around" the topic rather than focusing on the exact context requested.

History

How to improve

You must explicitly demonstrate the link between the factor and the result.

After stating a reason for change, use a connective like "this led to..." and provide a detailed explanation of the mechanism that caused the specified historical outcome

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (IGCSE) History papers for 2027 compared to 2026?+

No structural changes. The core exam layout, question formats, timings, and mark allocations under specification 4HI1 are identical to 2026:

When did the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE History specification last undergo a major overhaul, and what updates have happened since?+

The last major structural overhaul was introduced for first teaching in September 2017, with first exams in June 2019. This established the current 9–1 grading scale (replacing A*–G) and set the core structure, topic combinations, and exam lengths still in use today. Since then, three smaller operational updates have been rolled out: • June 2023 — One new optional topic added to Breadth Studies: Option B8, Diversity, rights and equality in Britain, 1914–2010. All existing topics remained unchanged. • September 2023 — A Modular pathway (4XHI1) was introduced alongside the existing Linear route (4HI1), allowing Unit 1 and Unit 2 to be sat across separate exam windows. Content and question styles were unaffected. • May/June 2024 — Onscreen digital sitting introduced as an alternative to traditional pen-and-paper exams.

Do I lose marks for bad spelling, punctuation, or grammar?+

No, there are no explicit SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) marks in Edexcel International GCSE History (unlike the UK domestic GCSE). However, if your writing is so unclear that the examiner cannot understand your argument, you will lose marks implicitly because your explanation lacks clarity. Write clearly and use paragraphs

Are any major changes coming to the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE History specification (4HI1 / 4XHI1)?+

No. The international specification is locked in for the foreseeable future. Having recently completed the rollout of both the Modular pathway and Onscreen digital testing, Edexcel is in a period of multi-year curriculum stability with no structural, content, or marking changes planned. One common source of confusion: articles or teacher forums referencing "Major Edexcel History Changes for 2025/2026" are almost certainly discussing the UK domestic GCSE (1HI0), not the IGCSE.
