Examiner Insights/Edexcel GCSE History

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Inappropriate Follow-up Enquiries

In the follow-up section, students often propose questions that are too narrow (focused on a specific person/event) or ask the author a direct question. They also frequently suggest inappropriate sources such as "history books," "the internet," or "an interview," which are not contemporary to the period in question.

““history books”

History

How to improve

Propose a question that links the source detail to the broader enquiry.

When identifying a source, be as precise as possible (e.g., "1881 Census" or "Army medical records") and ensure it is a contemporary record that would actually contain the information needed to answer your question.

02Common mistake

Asserted Judgements Without Criteria

In the high-mark essays, many students offer a conclusion stating that a statement is "somewhat true" without establishing the criteria they used to reach that decision. Without justified criteria, the answer remains a summary of two sides rather than an evaluation.

““somewhat true”

History

How to improve

Establish explicit criteria for your judgement in your introduction.

Appropriate criteria include: which factor had the longest-lasting impact, which affected the most people, or which acted as a catalyst for other developments. Thread this evaluation throughout your answer, weighing each point against your chosen criteria rather than just at the end.

03Common mistake

Missing the Structure in Question 1

Many students lose marks in Question 1 Paper 1 by identifying a valid feature but failing to provide supporting detail, or by listing disconnected facts. Others write excessively long answers for a 4-mark question, which wastes time needed for later sections.

History

How to improve

Use a "two-sentence rule" for each feature.

The first sentence should clearly identify one valid feature from the specification. The second sentence must provide an additional detail that adds context or explains the feature. Ensure the detail is directly linked to the identified feature and use different material for your second feature.

iWhere it counts: Feature + Detail

04Common mistake

Responding to the Topic Rather Than the Focus

A common reason knowledgeable answers fail to reach Level 4 is that they describe the general topic instead of addressing the specific conceptual focus of the question. For instance, if a question asks about the problems of transporting wounded soldiers, describing the transport methods themselves without explaining why they were problematic is a mistake.

History

How to improve

Read the question carefully and identify the "key idea" being tested.

Every paragraph of your analysis should be explicitly linked back to this focus (e.g., "This shows how attitudes became more positive because...") rather than just describing events

iCheck the command word before you write.

05Common mistake

Using Generalizations instead of Specific Evidence

Weaker answers rely on general comments like "people wanted change" or "the world was divided" without providing the precise details needed to support their analysis.

““people wanted change”

History

How to improve

Demonstrate depth of knowledge by including specific evidence such as names of individuals, dates, statistics, and specific events.

For example, instead of saying "the Church was wealthy," mention specific taxes like the tithe or the value of certain items like £700 Christmas robe

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to the Edexcel History papers for 2027 compared to 2026?+

No. The exam structure, layout, and timing for 2027 are identical to 2026. The major overhaul to Edexcel History papers was introduced for the 2025 series and carries forward unchanged into both 2026 and 2027.

What are the exam timings for 2026 and 2027?+

All three papers use the same extended timings: • Paper 1 — 1 hour 20 minutes • Paper 2 — 1 hour 50 minutes • Paper 3 — 1 hour 30 minutes

When did Edexcel last update the GCSE (9-1) History specification, and what changed?+

The most recent changes were rolled out in two phases between 2024 and 2025, both building on the original 2016 framework rather than replacing it entirely. Phase 1 — Assessment & Language Shift (Specification Issue 5, first examined Summer 2025): Edexcel added extra reading and planning time across all three papers, split entry questions on Papers 1 and 2 into distinct sub-questions for accessibility, and modernised outdated historical terminology across several modules (for example, "enslaved people" in place of "slaves"). Phase 2 — Content Simplification (Specification Issue 6, first taught September 2024, first examined Summer 2026): Edexcel reworded unclear focus areas and stripping out unnecessarily granular detail. Popular modules affected include Weimar and Nazi Germany, Early Elizabethan England, and The American West. The explicit goal was to reduce the volume of factual content students need to retain, without making existing school textbooks obsolete. Specification Issue 6 is the current live version. Any materials produced before late 2024 reflect the older, heavier content requirements and should be used with caution.

Wait, Paper 2 has two different topics. Do they come in the same booklet?+

No, Paper 2 is the exception. Because Paper 2 tests two completely different modules (your Period Study, like Cold War, and your British Depth Study, like Elizabethan England), you will be handed two completely separate physical booklets at the exact same time. They are typically marked by different examiners. Never use an extra sheet of paper to continue an answer for both topics. If you run out of space, ask for separate extra sheets for each booklet.
