    Misunderstanding Command Words (Describe vs. Explain)

    Common mistake: Students often provide descriptions when asked to "explain," or include unnecessary explanations when the command is "describe". For example, when asked to describe the movement of water, students might explain why it moves (diffusion/osmosis), which gains no credit if only a description of the pattern was required.

    How to solve it: : Carefully identify the command word. If it says "describe," state what is happening (e.g., "as light intensity increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases"). If it says "explain," you must state why it is happening, often using the word "because" (e.g., "...because there is more energy for the reaction").

    Imprecise Terminology Regarding Energy

    Common mistake: A very common and "long-held" error is stating that energy is "produced," "made," or "created" during respiration. Some students also incorrectly suggest that energy is used for respiration rather than being the result of it.

    How to solve it: In the context of respiration, always use the terms "released" or "transferred".

    Confusion Over Osmosis Terminology

    Common mistake: Students often fail to specify that it is water molecules moving, or they confuse the direction of movement (e.g., saying salt moves instead of water). Another common error is referring to "water concentration" without specifying it is moving from a dilute to a concentrated solution.

    How to solve it: Always define osmosis clearly: the movement of water molecules from a dilute solution (high water potential) to a concentrated solution (low water potential) through a partially permeable membrane

    Careless Graph Reading and Plotting

    Common mistake: Marks are frequently lost due to inaccurate plotting of points (e.g., using dots that get obscured by the line) or misreading the scale on the axes.

    How to solve it: Use a sharp pencil and clear crosses (x) for plotting. Always use a ruler for drawing bars or lines of best fit. Double-check the scale—sometimes two small squares represent 0.1 units, but students often assume one square equals one unit

Are there any changes to the AQA GCSE Biology (Separate Science) specification for 2027?+

The specification is identical to 2026.

When was the last major change to the AQA GCSE Biology specification, and what changed?+

The last major overhaul was in 2016 (first taught September 2016, first examined Summer 2018) as part of the UK's 9–1 grading reform. Key changes then: • Linear assessment (all exams at end of Year 11, no modular units) • Shift from letter grades (A*–G) to numerical grades (9–1) • Removal of coursework, replaced with 10 Required Practicals tested via written exam questions • Expanded content on monoclonal antibodies, plant diseases, and advanced genetics Since 2016: Only minor tweaks. The core specification has remained locked. Next major change will not until September 2028 (first new exams Summer 2030), following the UK's Curriculum and Assessment Review. Until then, all past papers from 2018 onward match the current format exactly.
