Common Religious Studies A mistakes and how to fix them — tap a tip for the full explanation.
Common mistake: Many students waste valuable time developing their points in the first question of each section. On an "outline" question, development does not receive extra credit.
How to solve it: Be concise. Provide one piece of correct information per sentence. Focus on identifying the required beliefs or practices rather than explaining them.
Common mistake: A frequent error is providing several reasons but failing to add the necessary detail to "explain" them. Students often give one reason with no development, resulting in only 1 out of 4 marks.
How to solve it: Provide exactly two reasons and develop both. Development consists of adding extra reasoning, examples, or specific details. A good technique is to use one paragraph for each developed reason.
Common mistake: The most common reason students stay in lower mark levels for (d) items is providing a "for and against" list of reasons without analysis or evaluation (AO2).
How to solve it: You must assess the validity or strength of the arguments. Instead of just stating what people believe, explain why an argument might be strong, weak, or more persuasive than another
Common mistake: Students often fail to address the specific bullet points under a (d) question, such as referring to "different Christian points of view" or "non-religious viewpoints" when requested.
How to solve it: Read the bullet points carefully. They are instructions, not suggestions. For example, if the question asks for different viewpoints within the religion, make sure you show diversity in belief (e.g., Sunni vs. Shi'a or Orthodox vs. Reform).
Common mistake: While frames can help, they often restrict the flow of argument and lead to repetitive, low-level appraisal (e.g., repeating "This is a strong argument because...").
How to solve it: Focus on building a coherent, sustained analysis rather than just filling in a template.
No structural, core content, or assessment format changes are happening for 2027 compared to 2026—the format remains 100% exam-assessed across three papers. However, Edexcel has released updated Knowledge Organisers specifically tailored for Specification A (focusing on Christianity and Islam papers) that reflect the exact layout and depth examiners are emphasizing, so new study materials should incorporate these. All resources, question banks, and mock papers valid for 2026 can be safely used for 2027 without modification.
The last major overhaul was in September 2016 (first assessed Summer 2018), which introduced the current 1RA0 specification code, multi-paper structure, and 9–1 grading system—the core topics taught today date back to this. Since then, there have been two administrative updates with no core content changes: a Late 2019 Issue 2 reprint that reformatted topic codes and corrected spelling/formatting errors for clarity, and a November 2023 adjustment to the mark scheme descriptors for the 12-mark evaluation questions that clarified grading criteria for examiners without changing the content being assessed. Because the fundamental core content hasn't changed in a decade, resources and past papers from 2018 onward remain structurally relevant for practice—just apply the post-2023 mark scheme onwards guidelines when grading the 12-mark questions.
Edexcel runs two entirely separate tracks simultaneously. Specification A (1RA0) focuses on monotheistic faiths with a deep dive into one religion per paper across 3–4 shorter papers, whereas Specification B (1RB0) uses thematic issues and philosophy structured around two long papers with themes like "Religion and Ethics" and "Religion, Peace & Conflict." To confirm your specification: check your textbook or notes for chapter titles—if you see "Matters of Life and Death" or "Crime and Punishment," you're doing Spec B; if you see faith-based headings like "Catholic Beliefs and Teachings" or "Islam Practices," you're doing Spec A.
Never search "Edexcel GCSE RS past paper" and click the first link without checking the specification code, because practicing a Spec B paper when you're registered for Spec A will expose you to entirely different question formats and themes, which will throw off your pacing strategy and waste revision time. Always verify that the code 1RA0 is printed on the top left corner of the exam paper cover page before downloading or using any past paper.
Target your weak topics, review examiner insights, and improve your Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies A grade.
