Examiner Insights/Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Expanding Squared Brackets

A very frequent error is expanding (a+b)2 as a2+b2, missing the middle term.

Mathematics

How to improve

Always write out the brackets as (a+b)(a+b) and use the FOIL method (First, Outside, Inside, Last) or a grid to ensure all four terms are generated

02Common mistake

Inequality Signs

When dividing or multiplying an inequality by a negative number, students often forget to reverse the inequality sign.

Mathematics

How to improve

Be disciplined with signs; if you divide by a negative, the sign must flip (e.g., −4x>8 becomes x<−2).

03Common mistake

Assumed Right Angles

Students often incorrectly use Pythagoras’ Theorem or SOH CAH TOA on triangles that are not right-angled.

Mathematics

How to improve

Check the diagram carefully; if a triangle is not marked as right-angled, you must use the Sine Rule or Cosine Rule

04Common mistake

Formula Misuse

Confusion between area and circumference of a circle is common, as is using the formula for a cone when a cylinder is required.

Mathematics

How to improve

Consult the formulae sheet on page 2 of the paper to ensure you are using the correct equation for the specific shape.

05Common mistake

Mean from Grouped Data

Students often multiply the frequency by the class width or the lower/upper bounds instead of the midpoints.

Mathematics

How to improve

Always use the midpoint of each interval to calculate an estimate of the mean.

06Common mistake

Probability Calculations

When dealing with multiple events (e.g., drawing two sweets), students often fail to account for "without replacement" and use the same denominator for both fractions.

““without replacement”

Mathematics

How to improve

Read the question carefully to see if the item is replaced; if not, the denominator must decrease for the second event.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specification changing for 2027?+

No. The 2027 specification is identical to 2026—same format, tiers (Foundation and Higher), topics, and assessment style. Formula sheets remain provided during exams. Past papers from 2020 onwards are still your best study resource. Note: Don't confuse Edexcel with Cambridge IGCSE Maths, which has major changes (non-calculator paper, new topics) for 2025–2027. Edexcel remains fully calculator-based.

When was the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specification last significantly overhauled?+

The last major overhaul was for first examination in June 2018. It introduced the 9–1 grading scale and added advanced topics like basic calculus and algebraic functions to Higher Tier. Since then, there have been two minor administrative updates: Edexcel removed the January exam series in November 2023 (replacing it with November exams; content unchanged) and introduced a Modular option in September 2024 (same content, but exams split across different series instead of all at the end). The core mathematics content has remained stable since 2018.

How do you know which Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specification and exam format you're registered for?+

Check your course materials, statement of entry, or school portal for your specification code. Specification A (4MA1) is the standard course with Foundation (Grades 1–5) and Higher (Grades 4–9) tiers. Specification B (4MB1) is accelerated for advanced students (Higher only) with additional topics like matrices and set notation. For exam format, Linear (traditional) means both papers at the end with codes like 4MA1/1H; Modular (introduced recently) splits units across exam series with codes starting 4XMA. Verify by asking your exam officer, checking your statement of entry, or matching your past papers' codes to your registration. Don't mix Specification A and B practice papers—they cover different content.
