Examiner tips.
Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.
Incomplete Explanatory Chains
A recurring issue is students only stating a factor without building a logical sequence of "this leads to". For "explain one..." questions, many fail to develop the point enough to earn all available marks.
“this leads to”
How to improve
Use the number of marks as a guide for the required depth.
A 3-mark "explain" question requires an initial point followed by two distinct links in an explanatory chain (e.g., "Heavy rain leads to saturated soil (1), which increases surface runoff (1), leading to a rapid increase in river discharge (1)").

Confusing Accuracy and Reliability in Fieldwork
Students frequently use these terms interchangeably. For example, they might suggest an "accurate" method when they are actually describing a way to increase "reliability".
How to improve
Learn the specific definitions: Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value (e.g., using better equipment), whereas reliability is about consistency and repeatability (e.g., increasing sample size or repeating the test)

Misinterpreting Stages of the Geographical Enquiry
Many students struggle to distinguish between different stages of fieldwork, such as confusing data collection methods with data presentation or data analysis techniques.
How to improve
Be confident in explaining what happens at each stage.
For example, a questionnaire is a collection method, a bar graph is a presentation technique, and "comparing results" is a simplistic analysis technique.

Descriptive rather than Analytical 8-Mark Responses
For the longer response questions, students often describe the data shown in the resource but fail to meet the "analyse" command word.
How to improve
Investigation of an issue by breaking it down into components and making logical, evidence-based connections between them.
While an evaluation statement is not strictly required at the end, providing a judgement on the significance of different factors is essential for the highest marks.

Ineffective Use of Resources (AO3 Skill) for Paper 2
Only using one resource when the question directs you to two, or describing a graph without linking it to geographical concepts.
How to improve
Use resources as a starting point to develop your argument.
Link specific evidence from the resource (e.g., data points or map regions) to your own knowledge and understanding (AO2).

Poor Time Management Based on Question Tariff
Students frequently spend too much time on low-mark questions, leaving insufficient time for high-tariff extended responses.
How to improve
Use the mark tariff as a guide.
A 2-mark ‘describe’ question only needs a basic point and one development. Save your depth and structured discussion for the 8 and 12-mark questions.
