Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Failing to use "Own Words" in Question 2

The most frequent mistake in Question 2 paper 1 is copying large parts of the text or making only minor adaptations, such as changing a single verb or pronoun. Teachers constantly state this does not demonstrate sufficient understanding to earn marks.

How to improve

You must paraphrase the ideas entirely.

Instead of "The writer was utterly exhausted," write "The writer's whole life is devoted to the task, which wears him out". Aim for four clear and distinct points written in full sentences.

Check the command word before you write.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A (4EA1) for 2027 compared to 2026?

No major changes. Core structure, assessment objectives (AO1–AO5), and exam content is largely unchanged. Minor administrative updates (mark scheme clarifications, documentation) occurred but no structural overhauls for 2027.

When was Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A (4EA1) last updated?

The most recent update was September 2025 (announced August 2025), with minor adjustments to specification, sample assessment materials, and Paper 2 mark scheme for first teaching September 2025 and all subsequent series (November 2025, 2026, 2027). These were minor refinements to assessment, not fundamental content, topics, or exam structure changes.

What's the difference between Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language codes 4EA1 and 4EB1?

4EA1 (English Language A — standard/first-language route) is designed for fluent English speakers in English-medium schools; includes studied Anthology (poetry and prose) across 2 papers (or 1 paper + coursework); highly preferred by universities and sixth-form colleges for progression. On the other hand, 4EB1 (English Language B — second-language/skills-focused route) targets non-native or additional-language speakers preferring skills-based, unseen-text approach; uses only unseen texts with no pre-studied Anthology across a single 3-hour exam; widely accepted but less universally recognized. How to choose: (1) Check your institution — school has already selected; you follow their curriculum. (2) Check progression needs — if universities specify "English Language" at IGCSE, 4EA1 is safest, most recognized. (3) The Anthology test — want to study set poems/prose in depth? Choose 4EA1. Prefer tackling only unseen texts and writing tasks? Choose 4EB1. Note: 4EA1 is the standard, universally recognized qualification.
