Examiner Insights/Edexcel GCSE German

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Failing to Address or Develop All Bullet Points

In writing tasks, students sometimes omit a bullet point entirely or fail to expand upon them. This error "caps" the maximum marks achievable for Communication and Content, often preventing access to the top bands.

German

How to improve

Use the bullet points as a checklist to ensure every point is addressed and developed.

Aim to write two or three additional sentences for each bullet point to illustrate or develop your ideas

iCheck the command word before you write.

02Common mistake

Inaccurate or Inconsistent Use of Tenses

Higher Tier students frequently struggle to clearly distinguish between present, past, and future time frames. Common errors include omitting auxiliary verbs in the perfect tense (e.g., ich gegangen instead of ich bin gegangen) or using the wrong tense for a specific bullet point.

German

How to improve

Ensure you can write clearly about the three main time frames using a variety of verbs.

Practice conjugates properly and remember that a present tense with a future indicator (e.g., nächstes Jahr) can effectively fulfill the future time frame requirement

iCheck the command word before you write.

03Common mistake

Poor Command of Word Order

Many students fail to use inversion (placing the verb before the subject) after starting a sentence with an adverbial phrase (e.g., Letztes Jahr, ich habe... instead of Letztes Jahr habe ich...). Verb placement in subordinate clauses is also a frequent source of error.

German

How to improve

Master the "verb-second" rule for main clauses and practice inversion.

Study the specific word order required by different conjunctions, particularly the difference between coordinating (e.g., und, aber) and subordinating (e.g., weil, obwohl) conjunctions.

iWhere it counts: Inversion and Subordination

04Common mistake

Misinterpreting German Question Words

Students often lose marks by not carefully identifying what the question is asking. For example, answering "Switzerland" (where) when the question asks "when" (Herbst).

German

How to improve

Use your five-minute reading time to analyze the question words (wer, wann, wo, warum, welch-) and titles, which provide vital clues about the required information.

iCheck the command word before you write.

4 / 6
05Common mistake

Giving Too Many Answers for Limited-Mark Questions

For questions worth one or two marks, some students provide three or more pieces of information. Examiners will only mark the first two responses (for a 2-mark question) or the first response (for a 1-mark question), meaning a correct third answer will not be credited.

German

How to improve

Check the number of marks available for each question and provide only that many pieces of information.

iCheck the command word before you write.

5 / 6
06Common mistake

Ignoring Qualifiers, Negatives, and Synonyms

Students often fail to notice crucial negatives (nicht, kein) or qualifiers (nur, fast, ganz wenige, kostenlos) that change the meaning of a sentence. In multiple-choice questions, these are often used as "distractors".

German

How to improve

Listen and read carefully for qualifying adjectives and adverbs.

Be aware that questions set in German will often use synonyms (e.g., matching schmutzig with dreckig) rather than the exact word found in the text.

iCheck the command word before you write.

No. The Pearson Edexcel GCSE German (2024 specification) remains the same for the 2027 exams. It was first examined in Summer 2026, and there is no new or redesigned specification for 2027. Minor updates may occur, but they do not change the overall course or assessment structure.

Can fluent German speakers take GCSE German?+
