Examiner Insights/Cambridge IGCSE Spanish as a Foreign Language

Where marks are made.

Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.

01Common mistake

Omitting or Misplacing Accents

Students often miss accents or place them incorrectly, which can change the meaning or grammatical function of a word, such as paso / pasó, esta / está, or si / sí.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Learn the common accent patterns, especially in verb endings and high-frequency words.

Before finishing, check words such as también, más, está, sí and past-tense forms where the accent may distinguish the meaning.

iCheck the command word before you write.

02Common mistake

Using the Wrong Verb Person or Tense

Students sometimes copy directly from a text in the first person when the question requires the third person, or they answer using the wrong tense.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Identify the required person and time frame before answering.

Adapt pronouns and verb forms where necessary—for example, me gusta → le gusta—and make sure your tense matches whether the task refers to the past, present or future.

iCheck the command word before you write.

03Common mistake

Copying Too Much from the Reading Text

Students often copy entire sentences from the passage, including unnecessary information that can make an otherwise correct answer unclear or incorrect.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Give the shortest accurate answer that fully responds to the question.

A single word or short phrase is often safer than copying a whole sentence, as long as it contains all the required information.

iCheck the command word before you write.

04Common mistake

Misunderstanding Question Words

Students sometimes give irrelevant answers because they misunderstand the interrogative word being used, such as giving a place when the question asks ¿Cuándo?

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Learn the main question words and what each one asks for: ¿Quién? asks for a person, ¿Cuándo? for a time, ¿Dónde? for a place, and ¿Para qué? for a purpose.

Identify the question word before looking for the answer.

iCheck the command word before you write.

05Common mistake

Confusing Ser and Estar

Students often use ser and estar incorrectly, such as using ser for location or estar for characteristics that are normally expressed with ser.

Change
of course

How to solve it

Remember that estar is commonly used for location and temporary states, while ser is used for identity, origin, time and characteristics.

Pay particular attention when describing where a person or object is located.
