Examiner InsightsCambridge IGCSE Business Studies
Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.
01Common mistake
Students often give vague or incomplete definitions of key business terms, or simply repeat the term itself. For example, defining a “business partnership” as a “partnership in a business” does not show understanding.
“business partnership”
How to solve it
They do not need to match the textbook word-for-word, but they must include the key meaning. For example, a sole trader is a business owned by one individual, not simply a “small business”.

02Common mistake
Students often give generic textbook answers without linking their points to the business in the question. This is especially common in longer Paper 1 questions and throughout Paper 2.
How to solve it
Refer to relevant details such as its products, number of employees, customers, location or financial figures, and explain how your point specifically affects that business.
Check the command word before you write.
03Common mistake
In longer questions, students often list several points without explaining how or why they matter. This shows knowledge but does not develop the analysis needed for higher marks.
How to solve it
Instead of simply saying “job rotation motivates workers”, develop it: job rotation reduces boredom → increases worker interest → may reduce mistakes → increases productivity. Each point should clearly show how it affects the business.

Yes. Cambridge IGCSE Business is being updated for the 2027 examination series, with changes to syllabus content, terminology and emphasis on areas such as digital business and sustainability. Students taking exams in 2027 should therefore check their exact syllabus code and specification with their school, as older 2026 resources and past papers may not fully match the new syllabus.
Before the new syllabus introduced for 2027, the last major update to Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies (0450) took effect for the 2020–2022 exam cycle. The syllabus remained broadly similar from 2023 to 2026, with only minor updates before the larger 2027 changes.
Check your exam year and official school registration. If you are taking your exams in 2027 or later, you may be studying the new 0264 syllabus (or 0774 for the 9–1 grading route). If you are taking exams in 2026 or earlier, you should normally be following 0450. Your school portal, statement of entry, teacher or exams officer can confirm the exact syllabus code you are registered for.
Target your weak topics, review examiner insights, and improve your Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies grade.
