Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.
01Common mistake
Students often include accurate knowledge that falls outside the dates specified in the question. Even correct facts may not gain credit if they are not relevant to the required time period.
How to solve it
If the question focuses on the 1920s, for example, avoid using developments from the 1930s unless they are directly relevant to the question.

02Common mistake
Students often spend too much time narrating what happened instead of explaining why it happened or why it mattered.
How to solve it
Avoid long background introductions and focus directly on the “why” or “how” required by the question.

03Common mistake
In questions asking “how far” or “to what extent”, students sometimes discuss only one side of the argument.
“how far”
How to solve it
Then compare their importance and reach a balanced, justified judgement about which side is more convincing.

04Common mistake
Students sometimes analyse a source in detail without explicitly answering whether it is useful, surprising, reliable or whatever the question actually asks.
How to solve it
Start with a clear statement such as “This source is useful because…” or “I find this source surprising because…”, then use evidence and contextual knowledge to support that judgement.

05Common mistake
Students sometimes treat everything in a source as factual and ignore its origin, purpose and possible bias.
How to solve it
Test its claims against your contextual knowledge or other sources, and explain how the author’s purpose or intended audience may affect its reliability or usefulness.

06Common mistake
Students often use the conclusion simply to repeat the points already made in the essay.
How to solve it
Decide which side or factor is more important and explain why the balance of evidence supports that judgement, rather than simply summarising your previous paragraphs.

07Common mistake
Students often focus on individual details in a cartoon without identifying the cartoonist’s main message or overall viewpoint.
How to solve it
Then use specific details from the cartoon and your contextual knowledge to explain why that message was being communicated at that particular time.

No significant changes. Cambridge IGCSE History (0470) keeps the same core content, depth studies, assessment objectives and paper structure in 2027. Resources used for the 2026 syllabus therefore remain suitable for 2027.
The most recent major update to Cambridge IGCSE History (0470) took effect for the 2024–2026 exam cycle. The syllabus then continued into 2027–2028 without major structural or content changes.
The course has two parts: Core Content, covering major international developments such as the peace treaties after WWI, the League of Nations, the breakdown of peace in the 1930s and the Cold War; and a Depth Study, where you study one country or region in greater detail.
You take Paper 1, which tests knowledge and explanation; Paper 2, which tests source analysis; and either Component 3 Coursework or Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework, which assesses your chosen Depth Study in greater depth.
Check your school registration, student portal or Statement of Entry. Most students take History (0470), while schools using the 9–1 grading system may use 0977. You should also confirm whether you are taking Coursework or Paper 4, and which Depth Study your school has selected.
Target your weak topics, review examiner insights, and improve your Cambridge IGCSE History grade.
