Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.
Students often argue only one side of a case or describe the options rather than making a choice. Higher-level marks require "counterbalance"—considering the drawbacks or risks of the chosen path.
How to improve
Always end with a clear, justified conclusion.
Check the command word before you write.
Students frequently mix up related but distinct concepts, such as economies vs. diseconomies of scale, shareholders vs. stakeholders, or financial vs. non-financial motivation.
How to improve
Ensure you are answering exactly what is asked—for example, if a question asks for a non-financial objective, do not provide a financial one like profit.

Many students waste valuable time and space by re-writing the question stem as their opening sentence. This does not gain any marks and can prevent you from finishing the paper.
How to improve
Avoid preambles like "One reason why IKEA would employ temporary staff is..." and start immediately with the reason itself.

Students often show a lack of sound understanding regarding price skimming and competitive pricing. Many incorrectly believe price skimming is setting a low price (confusing it with penetration pricing) or that competitive pricing means charging much lower than rivals.

While many can recall formulas, students often fail to understand what the actual ratio means to the business. For example, calculating the Acid Test Ratio or Operating Profit Margin but being unable to explain how the business should use that figure to make decisions.

No significant changes — syllabus, exam format, and assessment objectives remain consistent. Assessment continues to use established command words (define, explain, analyse, evaluate, recommend) with emphasis on case study application, data interpretation, and balanced extended responses.
The current 4BS1 spec was introduced in 2017 (first assessments 2019) with no major syllabus changes since. Pearson confirmed in May 2026 that learners beginning September 2026 continue on this established specification
Check your official Statement of Entry or Exam Entry Form — it will explicitly state "Business - 4BS1." Exam boards organize all resources (past papers, mark schemes, reports) by code. Using wrong materials (e.g., UK GCSE 1BS0 or Cambridge IGCSE 0450) means you'll study different topics and question formats not on your exam. We do not recommend that you mix resources across exam boards.
Target your weak topics, review examiner insights, and improve your Edexcel IGCSE Business grade.
