Common Business mistakes and how to fix them — tap a tip for the full explanation.
Common mistake: In 9- and 12-mark questions, many students simply repeat points already made in their main body rather than offering a new, supported judgment.
How to solve it: To improve, your conclusion should weigh both options, consider the most important factor, and justify your decision using evidence from the case study, such as short-term vs. long-term impact.
Common mistake: A recurring error is the inability to distinguish between Total Quality Management (TQM) and Quality Control. Students often fail to explain how TQM improves standards during production, incorrectly focusing only on marketing and reputation.
How to solve it: Clearly define TQM as an approach involving all employees taking responsibility for quality throughout the process, whereas Quality Control is the inspection of the final product.
Common mistake: Many students mistakenly believe that a job analysis is a public document made available to potential employees.
How to solve it: Recognise that a job analysis is an internal document used by the business to identify the requirements of a role. It is the precursor used to help design the person specification and job description for the recruitment process.
Common mistake: Students often struggle to identify the difference between fixed and variable costs in relation to output, frequently incorrectly labelling wages or labour as fixed costs.
How to solve it: Categorise costs based on whether they change with output. Fixed costs (like rent) do not change regardless of how much is produced, while variable costs (like raw materials) increase as output increase
Common mistake: A major error in extended responses is "jumping" directly to a conclusion like "this leads to higher sales and profit" without explaining the intermediate steps.
How to solve it: Focus on a single line of argument and develop it fully by explaining the "why" and "how". Only link to sales or profit at the very end of your explanation once the topic-specific logic is complete
No. The specification is identical to 2026
The last major overhaul was in September 2017 (first assessed Summer 2019), which introduced the current 9–1 grading system and two-paper linear format. Assessment update for Summer 2026 onward: While taught content (marketing, finance, operations) remained identical, AQA changed how 6-mark questions are structured and marked. Before 2026, students had to focus narrowly on one specific factor tied to the case study. From 2026 onward, questions became broader, allowing students to pull in multiple contextual factors to reach full marks. Note that past papers and mark schemes from 2025 or earlier show different 6-mark question styles and criteria than 2026–2027 exams. Use 2026+ papers as your primary practice reference.
