Examiner Insights/Edexcel GCSE Spanish

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Confusion with Time Frames and Tenses

This is a recurring issue across all papers. In Writing, candidates often fail to use the correct tense required by a bullet point (e.g., using present instead of past). In Reading and Listening, candidates frequently misinterpret time expressions like hace dos años (two years ago) or el año que viene (next year), leading to incorrect answers.

Spanish

How to improve

Carefully identify key time indicators in the questions and bullet points before responding.

When writing, ensure you have a clear plan that includes references to the past, present, and future to meet mark scheme requirements

02Common mistake

Misinterpreting High-Frequency Vocabulary and Cognates

Marks are often lost on simple but critical words. Common examples include confusing mayor (older) with mejor (better), éxito (success) with "exit", and asignaturas (subjects) with "signatures".

““, and asignaturas (subjects) with”

Spanish

How to improve

Focus revision on high-frequency vocabulary items listed in the specification.

Do not rely solely on how a word looks; look for false friends (words that look like English but have different meanings) and use the context of the passage to verify your guess.

03Common mistake

Missing Mandatory Bullet Points

Many students lose significant marks in the "Communication and Content" category because they simply forget to address one of the four required bullet points.

““Communication and Content”

Spanish

How to improve

Use the bullet points as a checklist.

A helpful strategy is to dedicate one paragraph to each bullet point to ensure they are all covered and to help organize your thoughts.

04Common mistake

. Over-complicating Language Beyond Ability

Some students attempt complex structures they aren't confident with, leading to a lack of clarity that prevents them from reaching the top mark bands.

Spanish

How to improve

Stick to structures you have mastered.

While you should aim for variety, it is better to be clear and accurate with slightly simpler language than to be incomprehensible while trying to be overly sophisticated.

05Common mistake

Ticking Too Many Boxes in Grids

In multiple-choice questions where three statements must be identified, some students tick four or five boxes, which can lead to disqualification of answers.

How to improve

Always check the number of marks available at the bottom of the question.

Frequently asked questions

Has the 2027 Pearson Edexcel GCSE Spanish (Higher Tier) specification changed from 2026?+

The specification remains identical—same four equal papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing at 25% each). The only differences between 2026 and 2027 are administrative calendar dates: the Digital Sequencing Tool window runs March 11–25, 2027, and the Speaking exam window is April 15–May 20, 2027.

What were the major changes to the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Spanish specification introduced in 2024?+

The 2024 overhaul (first taught September 2024, first examined May/June 2026) completely replaced the 2016 specification with four key changes: 1. Strict vocabulary limits: ~1,700 words for Higher tier, with at least 90% of exam content drawn directly from this defined core list (replacing unpredictable, open-ended vocabulary). 2. New Dictation task (Paper 2): Students transcribe short Spanish sentences to test sound-to-spelling accuracy—a brand new Listening element. 3. New Read-Aloud task (Paper 1): Students read a short text aloud and answer unprepared follow-up questions—a new Speaking component. 4. Removal of obscure cultural content: Exam contexts now focus on functional, high-frequency language mechanics rather than culture-specific deep cuts. This was part of a nationwide Department for Education and Ofqual restructuring of Modern Foreign Languages across all GCSE boards.

How do you confirm which Pearson Edexcel Spanish GCSE syllabus and tier you're on?+

Check your Statement of Entry or past papers for the code—it will clearly tell you: For tier (within UK GCSE Spanish): • 1SP1 (H) = Higher Tier (grades 4–9) • 1SP1 (F) = Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) You must take all four papers on the same tier; mixing is not allowed. For qualification type: • 1SP1 = UK GCSE Spanish (4 papers: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing; instructions in English; includes dictation and read-aloud tasks) • 4SP1 = International GCSE (iGCSE) Spanish (3 papers; instructions in Spanish; no dictation or read-aloud tasks) Look at your textbook cover, past paper header, or ask your teacher. The code is either 1SP1 for UK GCSE, 4SP1 for iGCSE.
