Examiner Insights/Edexcel GCSE French

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Homing in on Individual Words

Many students listen for or read a single familiar word and immediately build an answer around it, ignoring the rest of the sentence. For example, hearing "family" might lead a student to guess a speaker works for their parents, when the speaker actually said their colleagues are like a family

French

How to improve

Listen and read for context.

You must wait until the end of a sentence or extract before deciding on an answer. Train yourself to understand how words relate to each other rather than just translating them in isolation

02Common mistake

Missing Negative Markers

Failing to identify negatives (e.g., ne...pas, pas moi, rien à faire) is one of the most frequent causes of lost marks, as it results in choosing an answer that means the exact opposite of the truth.

French

How to improve

Target the negatives. Specifically listen for the "ne" and "pas" sounds. In reading tasks, circle any negative markers you find to ensure you don't overlook them when matching statements.

03Common mistake

Confusion of Tenses and Time Frames

Students often struggle to distinguish between past, present, and future events. A common error is writing about what a speaker wants to do (future) when asked what they did (past).

French

How to improve

Identify time indicators.

Use your reading time to highlight words like hier (yesterday), avant (before), en ce moment (now), or à l’avenir (in the future). Pay close attention to verb endings and auxiliary verbs (ai, suis, vais) to confirm the time frame.

04Common mistake

Inadequate Bullet Point Development

In the Writing paper, some students miss a bullet point entirely or fail to develop their ideas, which prevents them from reaching the top mark bands.

French

How to improve

Address and Expand. Check off each bullet point as you write.

Frequently asked questions

Have the exam papers changed for 2027 compared to 2026?+

No structural or format changes. The papers follow the same 2026 specification—layout, length, and task types are identical. Pearson released only minor technical updates (Specification Issue 2) to vocabulary and grammar rules used in the papers, not the exam structure itself.

When did the current GCSE French Higher tier syllabus start?+

The last major overhaul took effect for first teaching in September 2024, with the first official exams in Summer 2026. This replaced the previous syllabus that had been in place since 2016 (first examined in 2018). The current syllabus introduced several major changes: a brand-new Dictation Task on Paper 1 (Listening) to test sound-to-script knowledge; a Read-Aloud Task on Paper 2 (Speaking) replacing older role-plays with unprepared interaction; strict vocabulary limits requiring at least 90% of Higher paper words to come from an explicit 1,700-word list; and removal of French-language questions from Reading and Listening papers.

Can native or fluent French speakers take GCSE French Higher tier?+

Yes, absolutely. There are no restrictions by UK exam boards. Fluent speakers often secure an easy Grade 9. However, they still get tripped up by three challenges: (1) English is Required for Answers—Reading and Listening papers have all questions and answers in English, so a native speaker must translate accurately and read English questions carefully or lose marks; (2) Explicit Translation Formatting—Writing and Reading papers mark strictly on exact grammatical accuracy (e.g., translating "I used to live" to imperfect j'habitais, not perfect tense), not natural rephrasing; (3) Strict Style Guides for Writing—Paper 4 requires responses to specific bullet points within word limits, so a beautiful essay that misses a bullet point loses marks. We’d recommend that fluent students should still practice at least two past papers to master English translation accuracy and learn the mark scheme's exact criteria.
