Examiner Insights/Cambridge IGCSE Physics

Where marks are made.

Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.

01Common mistake

Incorrect or Missing Unit Conversions

Students often begin calculations without converting values into the correct units, such as grams to kilograms, minutes to seconds or centimetres to metres. Unit prefixes such as milli (m), kilo (k) and mega (M) are also frequently misread.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Check and, if helpful, underline the units before starting a calculation.

Convert values into the required SI units first, pay close attention to prefixes, and always include the correct unit in your final answer.

02Common mistake

Confusing Mass and Weight

Students often treat mass and weight as the same quantity or forget to use the relationship (W = mg).

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Remember that mass is measured in kilograms (kg), while weight is a force measured in newtons (N).

Use (W = mg), where (g) is the acceleration of free fall, and use the value specified in the question or syllabus, such as 9.8 N/kg

03Common mistake

Neglecting Direction in Momentum and Velocity

Students often ignore direction when calculating changes in velocity or momentum, especially when an object rebounds or changes direction.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Treat velocity and momentum as vectors by choosing one direction as positive and the opposite direction as negative.

Then use change = final value − initial value, keeping the signs throughout the calculation.

04Common mistake

Electrical Circuit Misconceptions

Students often connect voltmeters in series or ammeters in parallel, confuse circuit symbols, or mix up how current and potential difference behave in series and parallel circuits.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Learn the standard circuit symbols and connection rules.

An ammeter is connected in series, while a voltmeter is connected in parallel across the component. Also remember that current is the same throughout a series circuit, while potential difference is the same across parallel branches.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) for 2027 compared with 2026?+

No. Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) follows the same 2026–2028 syllabus, so the content, assessment structure and paper format remain the same in 2027. Resources designed for the 2026–2028 syllabus are therefore suitable for both years.

When was the Cambridge IGCSE Physics syllabus last changed?+

The most recent major update to Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) took effect for the 2023 exam series. It introduced changes such as Space Physics, revised constants and units, and several topic additions and removals. The syllabus has remained broadly stable since then.

How do I know if Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) is the right syllabus code for me?+

Check your school registration, student portal or Statement of Entry. Most students take Physics (0625), while schools using the 9–1 grading system may use 0972 instead. You should also confirm whether you are entered for the Core or Extended tier and make sure you are studying Cambridge rather than another exam board such as Edexcel.
