Where marks are made.
Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.
01Common mistake
Using Pinyin or English in Writing Tasks
Students sometimes use Pinyin or English words when they cannot remember the correct Chinese characters, which can prevent them from gaining communication marks.
How to solve it
Learn the prescribed core vocabulary thoroughly and practise expressing the same idea in different ways.
If you forget a difficult character, use a simpler Chinese word or phrase you know rather than switching to Pinyin or English.
Check the command word before you write.
02Common mistake
Using the Wrong Time Frame
Students often fail to distinguish clearly between past, present and future in speaking and writing. For example, they may use 了 for a response that should describe a future plan.
How to solve it
Look carefully for time markers in the question, such as 打算 (plan), 将来 (future) or 上次 (last time), and make sure your response matches the required time frame throughout.
Check the command word before you write.
03Common mistake
Using Anglicised Word Order
Students sometimes translate directly from English, leading to unnatural or incorrect Chinese sentence structure, especially when placing time and location phrases.
How to solve it
Follow standard Chinese sentence patterns rather than translating word-for-word.
A useful structure is Subject + Time + Location + Verb + Object, and practising common sentence patterns will help make your writing more natural and accurate.
Check the command word before you write.
04Common mistake
Copying Random Sections in Reading
Students often copy large sections from the reading passage instead of selecting the exact information needed. Extra material may be irrelevant or even contradict the correct answer.
How to solve it
Identify exactly what the question is asking for and extract only the relevant detail.
Keep your answer concise and avoid copying surrounding information unless it is necessary to make the answer complete.
Check the command word before you write.
05Common mistake
Falling for Listening Distractors
Students sometimes choose an answer as soon as they hear a familiar word, without listening to the rest of the sentence. They may therefore miss a negative, correction or change of opinion.
How to solve it
Listen for the complete meaning before choosing an answer.
Pay particular attention to negatives such as 不 and 没, as well as words that signal contrast or a change of mind, rather than relying on the first keyword you hear.
