Examiner Insights/Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English

Where marks are made.

Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.

01Common mistake

“Feature Spotting” Without Analysis

Students often identify techniques such as alliteration, enjambment or caesura without explaining why the writer uses them. Comments such as “enjambment increases the pace” are too general if they are not linked to the specific text.

Change

Change of course

How to solve it

Go beyond naming the technique and explain how and why it is being used.

Link the writer’s method to a specific idea, feeling or effect, and support your analysis with evidence from the text.

02Common mistake

Retelling the Plot Instead of Analysing

Students often spend too much time explaining what happens in the story rather than building a critical argument about the writer’s choices.

How to solve it

Use a clear Point–Evidence–Analysis structure and make sure each paragraph develops an argument.

Treat the text as something deliberately constructed by the writer, and focus on how language, structure and form create meaning.

03Common mistake

Ignoring the Genre

When analysing drama, students sometimes write as though they are discussing a novel, referring only to the “reader” and ignoring the fact that a play is designed to be performed.

How to solve it

Maintain awareness of the text as a performance.

Refer to the audience and analyse stagecraft such as lighting, sound, movement, positioning and interactions between characters, as well as how these choices may affect the audience

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475) for 2027 compared with 2026?+

There are no major changes to the assessment structure in 2027, but the set texts may change between exam years. Students should therefore check the official 2027 syllabus to make sure they are studying the correct poetry, prose and drama texts for their exam series.

When was the Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English syllabus last changed?+

The current Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475) syllabus applies to the 2026–2027 exam period. While set texts may be updated between exam years, the main assessment structure and paper formats remain broadly the same until the next major syllabus revision in 2028.

What is the biggest difference between a general English essay and a Literature essay?+

You should also confirm which assessment route and set texts your school has chosen.
