01Common mistake
Omitting Graph, Map or Table Completion Tasks
Students sometimes miss questions that require them to draw, plot, shade or complete a visual resource because there are no answer lines underneath.
How to solve it
Check every page carefully and look for bold instructions such as “plot the data” or “complete the graph”.
Before finishing, make sure you have answered every part of each question, including any maps, graphs or tables.
Check the command word before you write.
02Common mistake
Incorrect Description of Distributions
Students often use vague terms such as “above”, “below”, “left” or “right” when describing maps. They may also describe a single location when the question asks for the overall distribution.
How to solve it
Use compass directions and geographical references such as along the coast, near the river or in the north-east.
When describing distribution, focus on the overall pattern using terms such as clustered, linear, dispersed or uneven.

03Common mistake
Irrelevant Introductions to Case Studies
Students sometimes write long background introductions that do not directly answer the question, wasting valuable time and space.
How to solve it
Get straight to the point and focus only on what the question asks.
For example, if the question asks about the impacts of flooding, discuss the impacts rather than spending time explaining the causes.

04Common mistake
Lack of Place-Specific Detail in Case Studies
Students often give generic case-study points that could apply to almost any location, such as “more jobs were created”, without supporting them with specific evidence.
“more jobs were created”
How to solve it
Support your case studies with place-specific detail, such as named cities, rivers, schemes, policies or accurate statistics.
Specific evidence shows stronger knowledge and helps you reach the higher mark levels.

05Common mistake
Vague Hypothesis Conclusions
Students sometimes give uncertain conclusions such as “it might be true” or “it is both true and false”, without making a clear judgement.
“it might be true”
How to solve it
Begin with a clear judgement, such as “I agree”, “I disagree” or “I agree to some extent”.
Then support that decision with relevant qualitative evidence and quantitative data from the investigation.

Frequently asked questions
Are there any changes to Cambridge IGCSE Geography for 2027 compared with 2026?
Yes. Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460 / 0976) has a major new syllabus for the 2027–2029 exam cycle. Changes include a redesigned paper structure, reorganised physical and human geography topics, new content such as climate change, updated terminology, and a greater emphasis on geographical skills and specific examples. Students taking exams in 2027 should therefore use resources specifically aligned with the new syllabus.
When was the Cambridge IGCSE Geography syllabus last changed?
The most recent major update to Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460 / 0976) takes effect for the 2027–2029 exam cycle. Before this, the previous syllabus was used through 2026, with the 2027 update introducing significant changes to both the course content and assessment structure.
Has Cambridge IGCSE Geography Paper 2 (Geographical Skills) been removed?
Yes, the standalone Paper 2 Geographical Skills exam has been removed from the 2027 syllabus. However, skills such as map reading, graph interpretation, grid references, contours and scale calculations are still assessed—they are now integrated into the Physical and Human Geography papers instead.
How do I know if Cambridge IGCSE Geography is the right syllabus code for me?
Check your school registration, student portal or Statement of Entry. Most students take Geography (0460), while schools using the 9–1 grading system may use 0976. You should also check your exam year: students sitting exams in 2026 follow the previous syllabus, while those taking exams from 2027 follow the new 2027–2029 syllabus.
