Are there any changes to Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language for 2027 compared with 2026?
No significant changes. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511 / 0991 / 0993) continues with the same syllabus structure and assessment format in 2027. Resources designed for the current syllabus therefore remain suitable for 2027 exams.
When was the Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language syllabus last changed?
The last major update took effect for the 2024–2026 exam cycle, with first examinations in 2024. The changes included removing Core and Extended tiers, revising the Listening and Reading & Writing papers, and updating the Speaking component.
What is the difference between Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511?
Both use the same Reading & Writing and Listening papers. The difference is Speaking: in 0510, Speaking is reported separately and does not affect the overall grade, while in 0511, Speaking is counted towards the final grade.
Will I lose marks if I go over the word count on writing tasks?
You won't face a direct "negative marking" penalty just for writing extra words, but writing too much is dangerous. Writing significantly over the word limit usually leads to repetition, poor time management, and a higher density of grammatical errors. Always aim to stay within or very close to the recommended guidelines.
How do I know which Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language syllabus code is right for me?
Check your school registration, student portal or Statement of Entry. Use 0510 or 0511 if your school follows the A–G grading scale*, and 0993 or 0991 if it uses 9–1 grading. The second difference is Speaking: 0510/0993 report Speaking separately, while 0511/0991 count Speaking towards your final grade
