Examiner Insights/AQA GCSE Geography

Examiner tips.

Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.

01Common mistake

Missing Evaluative Requirements in 6 and 9-Mark Questions in Paper 1

The most significant barrier to higher levels is failing to provide judgment or evaluation when requested by command words like "assess," "discuss," or "to what extent". Many students simply reproduce pre-learned knowledge without focusing on the evaluative requirement of the question.

““to what extent”

Geography

How to improve

Deconstruct the question to identify the command word and the need for a judgement.

Use evaluative comments throughout the answer rather than just at the end, and substantiate these comments with evidence. Phrases like "this is the most significant factor because..." help move a response into Level 3.

02Common mistake

Confusing Physical Processes and Sequences

Many students struggle to explain the sequence of landform development or confuse the specific processes involved, such as confusing hydraulic action with abrasion, or mass movement with weathering.

Geography

How to improve

Focus on learning the clear, sequential steps of landform formation (e.g., the cave-arch-stack-stump progression).

Integrate specific terminology (e.g., subduction, thalweg, or longshore drift) into the sequence to show exactly how the landform is created.

03Common mistake

Failing to Develop "Chains of Reasoning"

In 2 and 4-mark questions, students often make a single point and fail to develop it, or they repeat the question stem, wasting time and space.

Geography

How to improve

Practice using connective links like "this means that" or "as a result of this" to connect a basic point to its geographical consequence.

Each point in a 2-mark "explain" question should be elaborated.

04Common mistake

Misunderstanding "Physical Geography" vs "Human Geography"

Many students struggle to distinguish between physical and human features, often referencing roads or buildings when asked to describe the physical landscape.

Geography

How to improve

Review the Ordnance Survey (OS) skills checklist in the specification.

For physical geography, focus strictly on relief (height, slope, contour patterns) and drainage (rivers, lakes, tributaries). Avoid mentioning any man-made structures unless the question specifically asks for human-environmental interactions.

05Common mistake

Lack of Development in Short-Answer (2-3 mark) Questions

Students often gain the first mark by identifying a correct point but fail to secure subsequent marks because they do not develop their answer with evidence or explanation.

Geography

How to improve

For any 2-mark question, use the "Point, Evidence/Explanation" structure.

If the question asks for "two reasons," ensure they are distinct and qualified; for example, do not just write "pollution," but specify "air pollution from increased traffic".

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to AQA GCSE Geography (8035) for 2027 compared to 2026?+

No structural or content changes — the core curriculum, exam layout, and weighting remain identical. Because the spec is unchanged, all 2026 revision guides, question banks, and case study templates remain 100% accurate for 2027 exam prep.

When was AQA GCSE Geography (8035) last structurally reformed?+

The last major overhaul was September 2016 (first exams Summer 2018), introducing the current 8035 specification with its linear three-paper format (Physical, Human, and Geographical Applications) and eliminating old controlled assessment coursework in favour of examined fieldwork. Temporary pandemic adjustments to fieldwork requirements have since been rolled back. The framework remains completely intact for 2026, 2027, and 2028 cohorts. However, a new overhaul is coming: Following the UK government's Curriculum and Assessment Review, AQA is developing updated specs expected to be published Spring 2027, with first teaching September 2029 and first exams in 2031.

How do you verify you're on the correct AQA GCSE Geography specification (8035)?+

Check for Specification Code 8035 on textbooks, revision guides, or exam entry statements. Confirm it's correct by verifying: (1) Geography is linear — all exams at the end of Year 11 with no mid-year coursework; (2) You sit 3 exam papers (some boards only do 2); (3) You complete mandatory fieldwork — two geographical enquiries (one physical, one human) tested on Paper 3. The master code is 8035.
