Frequently asked questions
Are there any changes to the AQA GCSE Combined Science specification for 2027?+
No structural or content changes. The core curriculum, required practicals, and exam structure are identical to 2026. Equation sheets will continue to be provided in physics papers—students won't memorize the 18–23 formulas. However, questions focus on applying, calculating, and rearranging those formulas, not simply copying them from the sheet. The UK's Curriculum and Assessment Review won't affect current cohorts. New specifications are published Spring 2027, teaching starts September 2028, and first new exams are in 2031. Therefore, for 2027, all 2026 AQA Combined Science materials, past papers, and resources are 100% valid. Focus student practice on equation application rather than memorization
When was the last major change to AQA GCSE Combined Science, and what's changed since?+
The last major overhaul was in September 2016 (first examined Summer 2018), part of the UK government's GCSE reform. Key structural changes then: • Shift from A*–G to 9–1 dual grading (9-9 down to 1-1) • Linear assessment (all exams end of Year 11, no modules or coursework) • 21 Required Practicals replaced coursework, tested via written exam questions (at least 15% of marks) • Increased mathematical rigor (10% Biology, 20% Chemistry, 30% Physics) Minor updates since 2016: • 2019/2020: Clarifications on Paper 2 Chemistry drawing on Paper 1 concepts • 2022 onward: Physics equation sheets provided in exams (shifted focus from memorization to application and algebraic rearrangement) The next change will not be until 2031, when the first exams under the revised Curriculum and Assessment Review take place. The 2016 specification remains the baseline until then.
Do I have to memorize all the Physics equations?+
No. For the 2027 exams, AQA will continue providing an official Equation Sheet inside the exam. However, this means you will not get marks for simply writing down a formula. You are graded entirely on your ability to select the right equation, substitute the numbers correctly, and rearrange it algebraically.
Are there questions about practicals even though we didn't do a practical exam?+
Yes, and they are worth at least 15% of your total marks. There are 21 Required Practicals across the three sciences. The written exams will ask you to identify variables (independent, dependent, control), explain methods, analyze experimental errors, or draw conclusions from mock graphs.
What's the difference between AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) and Synergy (8465)?+
They cover the same science content but organize and examine it differently. Trilogy (8464) — the most common — keeps biology, chemistry, and physics strictly separate with 6 exam papers (1h 15m each, 70 marks). Synergy (8465) integrates the sciences thematically with 4 exam papers (1h 45m each, 100 marks). The easiest way to check which you're on is counting your exam papers: 6 papers = Trilogy; 4 papers = Synergy. Choose Trilogy if you prefer compartmentalising subjects; choose Synergy if you want to see how sciences interconnect. Revision resources are built overwhelmingly for Trilogy, so if you're on Synergy, studying Trilogy materials will leave you unprepared for how exam questions interweave disciplines.
