Examiner tips.
Practical advice to help you avoid common mistakes and write stronger answers.
Incomplete File Handling
Students frequently struggle with the full lifecycle of file operations, often opening a file to read or write but forgetting to close it. Others fail to correctly use delimiters (like commas) when processing CSV files.
How to improve
Practice the mandatory three-step process: Open -> Process (Iterate) -> Close.
When reading CSV files, always specify the correct delimiter character (e.g., split(",")) to ensure data is parsed correctly

Errors in Relational and Logical Operators
Marks are often lost by missing "edge values" (e.g., using > instead of >=) or confusing logical operators like AND and OR.
“edge values”
How to improve
Pay close attention to wording such as "31 or more" (which requires >=).
Use truth tables to verify your logic, especially when using NOT or combining multiple conditions in one statement
Check the command word before you write.
Improper Data Type Casting
A common error is attempting to perform calculations on string inputs or using string indexing on numbers without proper conversion.
How to improve
Explicitly cast your inputs to the required data type at the earliest possible stage using functions like int(), float(), or str().
For example, cast a user input string to an integer before using it in a mathematical formula.
Check the command word before you write.
Failure to Contextualise Extended Writing
In levels-based essay questions, many students provide generic answers that could apply to any profession rather than focusing on the specific scenario given (e.g., a health centre or a library).
How to improve
Explicitly link your points to the scenario.
If discussing higher clock speeds for a gamer, explain that it reduces "lag" and makes gameplay more "responsive" rather than just saying "the computer is faster". For security questions, discuss the specific risks to the data mentioned in the prompt (e.g., "patient confidentiality")
Check the command word before you write.
