Examiner Insights/Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences (Double Award)

Where marks are made.

Spot the common mistake. Make the precise correction.

01Common mistake

Graphing Skills

Students often draw dot-to-dot lines instead of a single best-fit line or curve. They may also choose awkward or non-linear scales, or use too little of the available graph space.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Choose a simple, linear scale that is easy to read and uses at least half of the grid where possible.

Draw a single smooth line or curve of best fit that represents the overall trend, rather than joining each point individually, and ignore clear anomalies when appropriate.

02Common mistake

Confusion Between Speed and Acceleration

Students often misinterpret graphs by confusing speed with acceleration. For example, on a speed–time graph, a horizontal line is sometimes described as stationary even though it actually represents constant speed.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Always check the axis labels before interpreting a graph.

On a speed–time graph, a horizontal line means constant speed and the gradient represents acceleration. On a distance–time graph, a horizontal line means the object is stationary.

03Common mistake

Errors in Chemical Bonding and Formulae

Students often make mistakes in dot-and-cross diagrams, ionic formulae and chemical equations. Examples include drawing too few shared electron pairs in CO₂, writing incorrect formulae such as NaCl₂, or forgetting that elements such as H₂ and N₂ are diatomic.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Check that ionic formulae have the correct overall charge balance and that covalent diagrams show the correct number of shared electrons.

Make sure atoms achieve the appropriate outer-shell arrangement and remember the common diatomic elements when writing equations

04Common mistake

Incorrect Measurement of Optical Angles

Students often measure angles between a light ray and the surface rather than between the ray and the normal. This leads to incorrect values for angles of incidence, reflection and refraction.

Change
of course
Change of course

How to solve it

Always draw a normal line perpendicular to the surface at the point where the ray meets it, and measure all relevant angles from the normal.

For reflection questions, carefully trace the full path of the light and account for any return journey or doubled distance where required.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any changes to Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences for 2027 compared with 2026?+

No. Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences (0654 / 0653) follows the same 2025–2027 syllabus, so the content, assessment structure and paper format remain the same in 2027. Resources designed for the 2025–2027 syllabus are therefore suitable for both years.

What does “Double Award” mean in Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences?+

It means you study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as one course but receive two IGCSE grades at the end, such as 8–8 or 7–6, rather than one grade.

What is the difference between Core and Extended?+

Core covers the fundamental syllabus content and has a lower maximum grade, while Extended includes additional content and more demanding questions, allowing students to achieve the highest grades.

How do I know if Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences (0654) is the right syllabus code for me?+

Check your school registration, student portal or Statement of Entry. Most students taking the double-award Co-ordinated Sciences course use 0654, while schools using the 9–1 grading system may use 0973. Make sure you are not studying Combined Science (0653), which is a single-award course, or separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics qualifications.
